They\u2019re fast and efficient, but they aren\u2019t always thoughtful, and that\u2019s the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s new definition of generative AI acknowledges its value but makes the danger crystal clear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If a page\u2019s main content (not just parts of it) is copied, auto-generated, paraphrased, or pulled together with no editing or added insight, it\u2019s going to be rated Lowest.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter if you credit your sources. If there\u2019s no real effort, it doesn\u2019t meet the standard.<\/p>\n<p>And from what I\u2019ve seen in the wild lately, this is going to impact a lot of sites.<\/p>\n<p>This is where choosing the right <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/on-page-optimization-service\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"2307\" data-end=\"2388\">on page SEO company<\/a> becomes critical\u2014ensuring content meets quality standards through real human optimization and insight.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"expanded-definitions-of-spam-and-content-abuse\"><\/span><b>Expanded Definitions of Spam and Content Abuse<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The 2025 update didn\u2019t stop at AI content. It also introduced several new categories to better define and target manipulative practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Key additions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Expired Domain Abuse:<\/b> When an old domain is purchased and filled with irrelevant or low-value content just to benefit from the domain\u2019s previous authority.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/news\/google-strengthens-guidelines-on-site-reputation-abuse-1772\/\"><b>Site Reputation Abuse<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b> Publishing content on reputable websites simply to boost visibility, not because it adds value to that site\u2019s original focus.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Scaled Content Abuse:<\/b> Creating large amounts of low-effort content\u2014often using automation\u2014with no originality or human review.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Low-Effort Main Content (Section 4.6.6):<\/b> Pages with content that is paraphrased, embedded, or copied from other sources, offering little to no added value.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-difference-between-low-and-lowest-ratings\"><\/span><b>The Difference Between Low and Lowest Ratings<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google has also added clarification around the distinction between Low and Lowest quality pages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Low Rating:<\/b> The page contains reused content, but shows minimal effort\u2014such as some editing, commentary, or curation.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lowest Rating:<\/b> The content is mostly copied, auto-generated, or paraphrased, with no clear sign of human involvement or purpose beyond SEO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Examples of content that could fall under these ratings include social media reposts with no added commentary, best-of lists pulled from other sites, and pages that summarize other sources without offering anything new.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"filler-content-is-now-a-quality-concern\"><\/span><b>Filler Content Is Now a Quality Concern<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>One thing I appreciate about this update is that it doesn\u2019t assume bad intent. It acknowledges that filler, fluff, and even reused content aren\u2019t always trying to deceive. But that doesn\u2019t mean they deserve to rank.<\/p>\n<p>For example, \u201cfiller content\u201d now gets special mention. That means intros that don\u2019t say anything, keyword-stuffed paragraphs, or explanations so broad they could apply to any topic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even if the page isn\u2019t dangerous or misleading, it can still be rated low if it gets in the user\u2019s way.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"exaggerated-author-bios-those-count-too\"><\/span><b>Exaggerated Author Bios? Those Count Too<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Another change that jumped out at me\u2014probably because I had written for many others in the past\u2014is the emphasis on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/news\/author-bio-for-seo-fake-author-bios-hurt-mueller-confirms-1923\/\">author credibility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If a page claims to be written by an expert, Google now expects to see that expertise reflected in the actual content.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not enough to say, \u201cI\u2019ve been in the industry for 5 years.\u201d Raters are instructed to do their own research, check credentials, and rely on what the page actually demonstrates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Overstated bios, vague references to qualifications, or claims of experience that aren\u2019t backed up by the material itself can now result in a Low rating.<\/p>\n<p>This directly ties into Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/blog\/google-eat-quality-guidelines\/\">E-E-A-T<\/a> criteria. These qualities must be evident in the content and not just claimed.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-id-recommend-to-creators-right-now\"><\/span><b>What I\u2019d Recommend to Creators Right Now<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re a writer, marketer, or site owner, this isn\u2019t the time to panic\u2014but it is time to act. Here\u2019s what I suggest based on the changes and what I\u2019ve seen working in the field:<\/p>\n<p><b>Edit AI-generated drafts before publishing: <\/b>Add insights, examples, or original viewpoints.<\/p>\n<p><b>Avoid padding content:<\/b> Every paragraph should help the user.<\/p>\n<p><b>Show, don\u2019t tell:<\/b> Prove expertise through clear, valuable information\u2014not just a strong-sounding bio.<\/p>\n<p><b>Audit old content:<\/b> Revisit posts that may have been created with minimal effort or too much automation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Focus on purpose:<\/b> Every page should serve a clear goal and provide value.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"key-takeaways\"><\/span><b>Key Takeaways<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">AI-generated content is a quality risk. If it lacks originality or human editing, it may receive the lowest rating.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">New definitions of content abuse were added.
