sites in English,\u00a0 noticed a steep drop.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite ranking first for key search terms, the outlet\u2019s clickthrough rates have been cut by more than half.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/wan-ifra.org\/events\/world-news-media-congress-2025\/\">WAN-IFRA World News Media Congress<\/a> in Krakow last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.linkedin.com\/in\/carlywilkiesteven\">Carly Steven<\/a>, Mail Online\u2019s director of SEO and editorial e-commerce, revealed that even top-ranked links are being sidelined.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The result is a <a href=\"https:\/\/pressgazette.co.uk\/publishers\/digital-journalism\/google-ai-overviews-leads-to-dramatic-reduction-in-click-throughs-for-mail-online\/\">drop in clickthrough rates<\/a> by more than href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/home\/index.html\">Mail Online<\/a> collaborated with an SEO software provider to study 5,000 keywords it competes for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When no AI Overview appears, Mail typically sees a 13% clickthrough rate on desktop and 20% on mobile from users searching those keywords.<\/p>\n<p>But when an AI Overview is present, even while the site maintains the top organic position, clicks collapse.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Desktop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/blog\/ctr\/\">CTR<\/a> drops to under 5%, and mobile hovers around 7%. In practical terms, the same content gets seen, but far fewer readers follow through to the source.<\/p>\n<p>In cases where Mail Online is featured directly in the AI Overview, traffic still declines by 44% on desktop and 32% on mobile.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"googles-promise-vs-publisher-reality\"><\/span><b>Google\u2019s Promise vs. Publisher Reality<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/news\/how-ai-overviews-ai-featured-snippets-are-transforming-search-results-1796\/\">AI Overviews<\/a> are supposed to help. The company insists that links embedded in summaries get more attention than they would as standard listings. But Steven isn\u2019t buying it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She referenced data from analytics firm Similarweb, which shows a marked increase in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/news\/zero-click-searches-dominate-google-in-2024-252\/\">zero-click<\/a>\u201d searches.<\/p>\n<p>One striking example she shared involved the search term \u201cNoor Alfallah news.\u201d Mail Online was ranking first for the query and earning around 6,000 clicks from it. Once an AI Overview was introduced, the traffic dropped to around 100 clicks.<\/p>\n<p>Steven said that around 20% of Mail\u2019s most valuable keywords in the U.S. on mobile are now affected by AI Overviews, along with 18% on desktop.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, the figure is slightly lower, roughly 11% to 12%. The numbers are already substantial and could grow quickly.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"ai-mode-a-deeper-threat-on-the-horizon\"><\/span><b>AI Mode: A Deeper Threat on the Horizon<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If AI Overviews are disruptive, what\u2019s coming next may be even more destabilizing. We are talking about the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/news\/google-expands-ai-overviews-and-introduces-ai-mode-2147\/\">AI Mode<\/a>\u201d here.<\/p>\n<p>Steven displayed an AI Mode response to a query about Jay Slater, a missing teenager from the UK. The result was so comprehensive that clicking on linked sources seemed unnecessary. This, she warned, could become the default experience. If that happens, traditional referral traffic may not just fall, it might vanish.<\/p>\n<p>At present, AI Mode appears as an optional tab for some users in the U.S., but Google has already confirmed it is testing it more widely.<\/p>\n<p>Stuart Forrest, Bauer\u2019s global SEO director, put it like this during a separate event: \u201cIf AI Overviews are bad for business and nibbling away at traffic, AI Mode threatens to eat it wholesale.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"an-evolving-search-landscape-that-favors-answers-over-clicks\"><\/span><b>An Evolving Search Landscape That Favors Answers Over Clicks<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Google\u2019s vice president of news partnerships, Jaffer Zaidi, offered a different perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the same Krakow event, he argued that AI Overviews are improving the search experience and driving more total queries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He said that users clicking through from these summaries stay longer on websites, suggesting better engagement.<\/p>\n<p>He also claimed that hard news topics are generally excluded from AI Overviews, meaning breaking news stories remain a safe zone for publishers.<\/p>\n<p>But Steven pushed back on that idea. She said AI-generated answers are increasingly being used for high-profile, fast-moving stories. That overlap is where publishers like Mail Online traditionally excel, yet it\u2019s also where AI is beginning to compete.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"where-publishers-still-have-leverage\"><\/span><b>Where Publishers Still Have Leverage<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Faced with shrinking search referrals, Steven suggested focusing on areas where human-led journalism still has the upper hand. Live blogs, opinion pieces, and branded searches are harder for AI to summarize convincingly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFocusing on the brand has never been more important,\u201d she said, noting that queries like \u201cMeghan Markle Daily Mail\u201d or \u201cPrince Harry Daily Mail\u201d still drive substantial traffic. These searches signal user intent and loyalty, something AI hasn\u2019t replicated.<\/p>\n<p>That loyalty offers a buffer, but it\u2019s small. Steven pointed to Reddit increasingly occupying Top Stories slots in Google results, which pushes traditional publishers further down the page.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Google\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/news\/google-strengthens-guidelines-on-site-reputation-abuse-1772\/\">Site Reputation Abuse update<\/a> has also hurt websites that rely on affiliate links or promotional content, a key revenue stream for many outlets.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, frequent algorithm changes are making it harder for publishers to maintain steady visibility in search rankings. What ranks today may not rank tomorrow.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"strategies-for-a-post-search-era\"><\/span><b>Strategies for a Post-Search Era<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As referral traffic becomes less reliable, publishers are rethinking their models. The goal now is to create demand strong enough that readers come directly through newsletters, mobile apps, social media, or subscriptions.<\/p>\n<p>Mail Online is already making changes. It\u2019s focusing on reader habits and where genuine interest overlaps with editorial strengths. Third-party analytics tools are being used to understand where traffic is coming from and where it\u2019s disappearing.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the data is incomplete. Google isn\u2019t providing full visibility into how AI Overviews or AI Mode are affecting traffic.
