To ensure accountability, transparency and fairness in how large online platforms operate.<\/p>\n<p>Under the DSA, companies like Google must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Avoid practices that unfairly favor their own services.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Ensure transparency about how information is presented.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Protect fundamental rights, including freedom of expression.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>German media groups claim Google\u2019s AI Overviews breach these principles by prioritizing its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/news\/ai-content-2024-how-to-stay-ahead-of-ai-detection-tools-717\/\">AI-generated content<\/a> over journalistic work.<\/p>\n<p>That is why they have urged the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/news\/googles-e1-49-billion-eu-fine-overturned-a-major-win-for-big-tech-907\/\">European Commission<\/a> to step in and launch proceedings against Google.<\/p>\n<p>So the bigger question becomes: Is Google undermining European digital sovereignty by reshaping how news is consumed?<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-do-other-media-leaders-say\"><\/span><b>What Do Other Media Leaders Say?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The outcry does not stop with Vaunet.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Christine Jury-Fischer, managing director of Corint Media, warned:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle is once again pushing back competing offerings, in order to consolidate its own position of power. If media diversity and democratic discourse are to be preserved, regulatory intervention is urgently needed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her statement echoes a sentiment widely shared across Europe: Google is too powerful to self-regulate.<\/p>\n<p>Without strong oversight, journalism risks being sidelined in favor of convenient, AI-packaged snippets.<\/p>\n<p>And this is not the first time publishers have raised the alarm.<\/p>\n<p>Back in July, the Independent Publishers Alliance lodged an antitrust complaint with the European Commission, asking for interim measures to stop the harm caused by AI Overviews.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK, a similar appeal landed at the Competition and Markets Authority, urging it to prevent Google from \u201cstealing journalism\u201d through AI-generated responses.<\/p>\n<p>So yes, Germany\u2019s complaint may be the latest but it is hardly isolated.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"what-could-happen-next\"><\/span><b>What Could Happen Next?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s step back and think about where this might lead.<\/p>\n<p>If the European Commission takes up the case, Google could face:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Regulatory investigations<\/b> under the DSA.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Financial penalties<\/b> if found in violation.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">Potential <b>restrictions on AI Overviews<\/b> in European markets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This could set a precedent for how<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanventures.com\/news\/ai-driven-content-creation-tools-reshaping-marketing-seo-and-investment-strategies-4286\/\"> AI-driven search tools<\/a> are allowed or restricted globally.
