Then came 2007, when Google bought DoubleClick for $3.1 billion, a deal that gave it the technology to deliver and track ads across the web. That\u2019s when advertising stopped being a side hustle and became Google\u2019s core business.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"a-new-name-a-bigger-game\"><\/span><b>A New Name, A Bigger Game<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In 2018, Google retired the old AdWords and DoubleClick names, rolling everything into one: Google Ads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ads were no longer just about search. They now stretched across YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Play, and millions of partner sites.<\/p>\n<p>That same year, Google\u2019s use of machine learning really took off. Advertisers didn\u2019t need to guess as much anymore.
