1-800-Flowers Leads Its Category in AI Search. The Whole Category Is Losing.
We ran 1-800-Flowers through four AI engines using RankScale, tracking real buyer questions about birthday flowers, anniversary gifts, and gift baskets. It beat every florist we checked. It still showed up in roughly one answer out of eight.
What We Actually Tracked
RankScale runs a brand against real buyer questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini, and Google AI Overviews. It scores how often the brand shows up, where it ranks when it does, and how the AI engines talk about it once it’s there.
For 1-800-Flowers, that meant 295 tracked buyer questions. Not brand searches. Category searches, the kind a buyer types before they’ve picked a florist, like “what are the best birthday flowers to send to a coworker” or “where can I order anniversary flowers for same day delivery.”
The numbers below come from a batch of runs on August 20, 2026.
The Short Version
- 1-800-Flowers has the highest AI Visibility Score of the 10 florists and gift brands we tracked, at 11.1%.
- That still means AI engines miss every brand we tracked, including the leader, in roughly 88% of category questions.
- Visibility swings hard by engine. Google Gemini surfaces the brand in about 1 of 4 relevant answers. ChatGPT barely surfaces it at all.
- Three smaller brands, Uncommon Goods, UrbanStems, and The Bouqs, get talked about far more warmly than 1-800-Flowers does, on a fraction of the visibility.
- AI shopping answers are still mostly unclaimed. Only 32% of shopping-flagged questions returned any provider at all.
Who’s Actually Winning
Ten brands showed up often enough to score. 1-800-Flowers sits on top, but the gap to Teleflora and FTD is thin, and the gap to a real answer is much wider than the gap between competitors.
Detection rate tells a rougher story than the leaderboard does. Even the leader gets found in only 12% of the questions it should be answering. Nobody has won this room yet.
One Brand, Four Different Report Cards
Same brand, same 295 questions, four AI engines. The spread between them is the real story.
Google Gemini does the heavy lifting, finding 1-800-Flowers in about a quarter of relevant questions and ranking it near the top when it does. ChatGPT found it once in the whole batch, too small a sample to read much into. A brand chasing one engine and calling the job done is chasing about a quarter of the problem.
Getting Mentioned Isn’t the Same as Getting Liked
1-800-Flowers shows up more than anyone else in the set. It isn’t the brand AI engines like best.
Uncommon Goods scores an 85.6% sentiment average, UrbanStems sits at 80.1%, and The Bouqs comes in at 79.0%. All three get mentioned a fraction as often as 1-800-Flowers does, at 71.7%.
1-800-Flowers
11.1% visibility score, but only 71.7% sentiment once people are actually reading about it.
Uncommon Goods
85.6% sentiment, the warmest in the set, on a 2.3% visibility score.
Visibility gets a brand into the conversation. It doesn’t decide how the conversation goes once the brand is there.
AI Shopping Answers Are Still Mostly Empty
When a question reads like someone’s ready to buy, AI engines only pull up an actual product or provider 32% of the time, 16 of the 50 shopping-flagged runs we tracked.
When 1800flowers.com does appear in one of those answers, it ranks first every time. The problem isn’t rank. It’s whether the engine surfaces a shopping answer, and a real provider, at all.
That’s a wide open lane. Whoever gets structured product and gifting content in front of these engines first has room to run before the rest of the category catches up.
What Actually Moves These Numbers
AI engines build answers from what’s written about a brand across the web. Category roundups, comparison posts, review sites, and gift guides carry more weight here than anything the brand says about itself.
A brand with strong reviews but thin third-party coverage tends to look invisible here, even with great products. A brand with wide coverage but average reviews shows up often and gets talked about coolly, which is closer to where 1-800-Flowers sits.
There’s no single fix. It takes consistent, credible mentions across the sites these engines already trust, paired with content that actually answers the buyer’s question.
This Isn’t Unique to Flowers
Swap flowers for legal services, SaaS, or home services and the pattern holds. Most brands in most categories are barely showing up in AI answers yet, and the ones that do show up aren’t necessarily the ones buyers end up liking.
That’s the opening. A category where the leader gets detected in 12% of relevant questions is a category where a handful of well-placed mentions can move a client from invisible to unavoidable.
