Google Blocks Restaurant Bookings—And Businesses Are Losing Out

Google is blocking restaurant reservations without warning, falsely telling customers that no tables are available. This glitch is leaving restaurants with empty seats and frustrated diners with no way to book.

Google Blocks Restaurant Bookings

Restaurant consultant Claudia Tomina recently exposed this issue. One of her clients discovered that Google had swapped their OpenTable integration for Google Assistant.

Instead of allowing direct online bookings, Google attempted to call the restaurant. But with over 1,500 calls per month, the restaurant only uses an automated message directing customers to book online.

Google, unable to reach a human, concluded that no reservations were available and shut off the option entirely. The result? Empty tables and lost revenue.

Task 319 - Google Blocks Restaurant Bookings—And Businesses Are Losing Out

Google’s “Fix” That Broke Everything

Tomina tried to resolve the issue by disabling Google Assistant. But instead of restoring OpenTable, Google displayed an even worse message: “This merchant is not accepting reservations through Google at this time.”

The restaurant never opted into this change, yet Google effectively hijacked its booking system, shutting out customers.

This issue goes beyond a simple glitch. Google has a track record of altering business listings without permission, frequently favoring its services over those of third-party platforms. However, this instance is directly harming restaurants’ ability to operate.

The Real Cost of Google’s Interference

Online reservations are critical for restaurants. Margins are thin, and every lost booking means lost revenue.

If Google falsely claims a restaurant has no available tables, customers will simply go elsewhere.

A more pressing concern is just how widespread this issue might be.

If one restaurant has identified the problem, it makes you wonder how many others might be unknowingly losing customers due to Google mishandling their listings bookings.

What This Means for Business Owners

With Google controlling search results and local business listings, even small changes can have major consequences.

Businesses have no say if Google decides its AI should handle reservations instead of OpenTable. If Google mistakenly flags a restaurant as “not accepting reservations,” that false information becomes a reality for potential customers.

What’s next? Will Google start managing restaurant pricing? Take a cut from bookings? Further dictate how customers interact with businesses?

This issue extends beyond reservations—it’s about how much control tech companies should have over independent businesses.

How Restaurants Can Fight Back

If your restaurant relies on online bookings, here’s what you can do:

  1. Monitor Your Google Business Profile – Regularly check for unwanted changes to your booking links.
  2. Disable Google Assistant Reservations – While it didn’t fully fix the issue for Tomina’s client, it may help.
  3. Listen to Customer Feedback – If customers report trouble booking, investigate immediately.
  4. Raise Awareness – The more businesses that report the issue, the more likely Google is to reverse its approach.
  5. Diversify Your Booking Options – Strengthen direct reservations through your website and social media to reduce dependence on Google.

The Bigger Picture

Google’s interference in restaurant reservations is a serious business problem. Restaurant owners should have full control over their own bookings, not be at the mercy of an AI that gets it wrong.

If businesses don’t push back, Google will continue making these decisions for them. Today, it’s reservations. Tomorrow, it could be something even more disruptive.

Key Takeaways

  • Google has replaced third-party booking systems like OpenTable with Google Assistant.
  • The glitch prevents customers from booking, leading to empty tables and significant financial losses for restaurant owners who rely on online reservations.
  • Google has a history of modifying business listings without consent, prioritizing its own services over independent platforms, and creating problems for business owners.
  • Google’s changes leave restaurant owners with no say in managing reservations.
