How We Grew A Vape Store’s Backlinks By 1,777%

The Client

An Online Retailer In One Of The Hardest Niches To Rank

The client is an ecommerce store shipping disposable vapes, pods, and kits out of a Texas warehouse, with same day dispatch and devices priced under $10. The catalog runs deep. Geek Bar, Lost Mary, Foger, RAZ, NEXA, Vozol, and roughly thirty other device brands across hundreds of flavor variants.

This account came to Stan Ventures through an SEO agency partner. Everything below shipped under the agency’s name, under NDA, with no client-facing contact from our side. The agency owned the relationship and the reporting. We owned the delivery.

Vape is a brutal place to earn links. Most mainstream publishers will not touch the category, ad platforms are closed off, and the sites already ranking are either large marketplaces or forums with a decade of history behind them. When the account was handed over on October 3, 2025, the store had 22 referring domains and 342 monthly organic visits.

The Challenge

A Deep Catalog With Almost No Authority Behind It

The store had product depth and nothing holding it up. Ahrefs showed 456 US keywords stuck past position 50 and only 17 sitting in the top 10. Search Console had indexing gaps, collection pages loaded slowly, and the flavor level pages that buyers actually search for were buried three clicks deep.

It got worse before it got better. Organic traffic fell from 342 in October to 198 in November while URL structures changed, titles were rewritten to a fixed convention, and technical fixes shipped. That dip is normal for a rebuild, and it is exactly why the program front loaded the technical work instead of opening with links.

The Strategy

Fix The Base First, Then Point Links At Pages That Could Hold A Ranking

The plan ran in a fixed order. Not a single link pointed at the site until the technical audit closed and every target keyword had a page mapped to it.

01 FOUNDATION

Months 1 And 2

GA4, Tag Manager, and Search Console rebuilt first. Then a full technical audit, structured data for every page type, page speed work, and a site structure rewrite that moved flavor pages one click from their collection.

02 KEYWORD MAP

30 Pages, One Target Each

A gap analysis across three competitors plus AI search keyword research fed a map covering 30 pages. Every collection and product page got one primary keyword and a title convention it had to follow.

03 CONTENT

Eight Pieces Every Month

One pillar blog, four new posts, and three rewrites of existing posts each month. Charging guides and flavor breakdowns, the questions buyers type before they ever reach a product page.

04 LINKS

Approved Before Anything Went Live

Guest posts on 30 plus and 40 plus DA sites, promotional brand mentions, and community placements. Every shortlisted domain and every draft went to the agency for sign off before publication.

The Results

22 Referring Domains To 413 In Twelve Months

The link curve and the traffic curve did not move together, and that is the point. Links compounded quietly through the winter. Rankings caught up in March, gave some ground back in May, then pushed to a new high by September.

Why It Worked

Three Links A Month, Until The Site Could Carry More

Vape punishes shortcuts. Nothing was bought in bulk and nothing published without the agency seeing the domain first. Link volume held at three or four placements a month through the winter, then more than doubled in April once the technical base could carry the weight. Referring domains went from 35 in March to 413 by September, and rankings moved with the links rather than ahead of them.

  • Pre-approval on every domain. The agency reviewed the outreach shortlist and the draft before a single link went live.
  • Technical work came first. Two months of audits, structured data, and speed fixes before any outreach started.
  • Pages built to catch links. Flavor and device pages were mapped to keywords first, so links landed somewhere that could rank.
  • Content answered buying questions. Charging guides and flavor breakdowns pulled in traffic product pages never could.
  • Monthly health checks. Ahrefs and Search Console audits every month caught indexing problems while they were still small.
