The CLIENT
Aqua Expeditions: A Singapore-Based Luxury Expedition Cruise Line
Aqua Expeditions sells cabins on small ships that go where the 3,000-passenger boats can’t. The Peruvian Amazon. The Mekong through Vietnam and Cambodia. Indonesia, the Galapagos, and private yacht charters for guests who want the whole vessel to themselves.
Every one of those destination pages fights the same crowd: global cruise lines, tour marketplaces, and travel magazines sitting on twenty years of links. “galapagos cruises” alone pulls 1,900 US searches a month, and the people typing it are ready to spend five figures. Aqua Expeditions came in with close to 3,000 referring domains already. Plenty of authority. It just wasn’t pointed anywhere useful.
The Challenge
A Big Link Profile That Was Leaking
On December 1, 2025, the day we started, Aqua Expeditions had 2,997 referring domains. Most of them landed on the homepage or on blog posts about river dolphins and Komodo dragons. The pages that take bookings, the destination pages and the private charter page, got whatever was left over.
Then there’s the leak. Sites this old lose links every single month: publishers redesign, articles get pulled, domains expire. Between late February and late April 2026 the profile fell from 3,085 referring domains to 2,925. That’s 160 gone in eight weeks, while we were actively adding new ones. Ten good placements a month were not going to show up in the numbers if churn ate all of them, so the plan had to do two jobs at once. Outrun the decay, and aim everything new at the pages that sell trips.
The Strategy
One Destination, One Page, One Relevant Story At A Time
Ten placements a month. Each one aimed at a single page, on a site whose readers actually book trips.
Page Mapping
Every order named one target before a word got written. Homepage, Galapagos, Mekong, Amazon, Indonesia, Raja Ampat, Bali, Komodo, or private charters. The Mekong page took close to a third of everything, because that’s where the client wanted the push.
Destination Content
Each article answered something a traveler actually Googles. When to visit the Galapagos. What you’ll see on a Komodo sailing. What the food is like on the Mekong Delta. Whether the Amazon works with kids. The link sits inside advice people read to the end.
Relevant Links
100 placements went live on DA 40 to DA 79 sites: Reader’s Digest Australia, Travel And Tour World, Female First, and a long bench of independent travel bloggers. Anchors mixed the brand name, bare URLs, and destination phrases so the profile never looked engineered.
Client Control
Nothing published without a yes from the Aqua Expeditions team. Some sites came back approved with strings attached, like rewrite it around sustainable travel, or make it a dive liveaboard piece. Four links later went 404 or never indexed, so we flagged them for replacement instead of counting them.

The Queries That Book Cabins Moved Up
No brand terms here. These are the searches people type before they’ve picked a cruise line, on the exact pages the links pointed at. US positions in Ahrefs, December 1, 2025 against September 15, 2026.
Why It Worked
Relevance Beat Volume
When your site already has 3,000 referring domains, another pile of random links does nothing. You need fewer links pointed at better places. Ten a month on real travel content beat the churn rate, and the Galapagos, Mekong, and Bali pages moved because that’s where the links went. No trick to it beyond doing the boring part every month for nine months.
