ChatGPT Is Citing Musk’s Grokipedia in Some Responses

View as Markdown

ChatGPT has been found citing Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia created by Elon Musk’s xAI, in answers to certain user queries, raising fresh questions about how disputed reference material can surface inside widely used AI tools.

ChatGPT Is Citing Musk’s Grokipedia in Some Responses

The references were identified by journalists reviewing responses generated by ChatGPT across more than a dozen questions.

According to reporting by The Guardian, Grokipedia was cited nine times, primarily in answers related to obscure or lightly examined topics rather than subjects that have been heavily scrutinized in public discourse.

What Grokipedia Is and Why It Exists

Grokipedia was launched in October by xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, following Musk’s repeated criticism of Wikipedia.

Musk has argued that Wikipedia reflects ideological bias, particularly against conservative viewpoints, and positioned Grokipedia as an alternative reference source built with the help of AI.

Soon after its launch, reporters began raising concerns about the project’s content. Many entries appeared to closely resemble Wikipedia articles, while others introduced claims that were widely criticized. These included assertions linking pornography to the AIDS crisis, ideological arguments defending slavery, and the use of derogatory language when discussing transgender people.

At the time, Grokipedia’s influence seemed limited to Musk’s own platforms. That assumption has now been challenged.

Where the Citations Appeared

The Guardian found that ChatGPT did not cite Grokipedia when answering questions about widely examined topics such as the January 6 attack on the US Capitol or the history of HIV and AIDS. Instead, the encyclopedia appeared in responses on less prominent subjects.

One example involved claims about historian Sir Richard Evans that The Guardian had previously shown to be inaccurate.

The appearance of Grokipedia in such cases suggests that controversial sources may be more likely to surface when a topic lacks widespread attention or established fact-checking.

Not Limited to a Single AI System

The issue does not appear to be isolated to ChatGPT. The Guardian also reported that Anthropic’s Claude has cited Grokipedia in some of its responses, indicating that multiple AI systems may be drawing from the same contested material.

This points to a broader challenge for large language models. These systems rely on vast collections of publicly available information, and sources that resemble encyclopedias can carry an automatic sense of credibility, even when their accuracy has been questioned.

OpenAI’s Response

In response to questions from The Guardian, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company aims to draw from a wide range of publicly available sources and viewpoints.

The statement did not clarify how often sources like Grokipedia are reviewed or whether additional safeguards are applied to material that has already attracted public criticism.

Why This Matters

AI tools are increasingly used as quick reference points for research, writing, and everyday questions.

When disputed or biased material enters those answers without clear context, it can shape understanding quietly rather than drawing attention to itself.

The situation highlights a tension facing AI developers. Expanding source coverage improves breadth, but it also increases the risk that unreliable claims gain visibility through trusted platforms.

What Readers Can Do

Users should treat AI-generated answers as starting points rather than final authorities. When a response cites unfamiliar sources or makes unexpected claims, checking established reporting, academic work, or primary documents remains essential.

This episode reinforces the idea that speed from AI tools does not replace the need for careful verification.

Key Takeaways

  • Grokipedia is an AI-generated encyclopedia created by Elon Musk’s xAI.
  • The Guardian found multiple instances of ChatGPT citing Grokipedia.
  • Citations appeared mainly in responses about obscure or lightly covered topics.
  • Anthropic’s Claude has also referenced Grokipedia.
  • The findings raise broader questions about source vetting in AI systems.
