OpenAI Tests Ads in ChatGPT for Free U.S. Users

OpenAI has started testing advertising inside ChatGPT for some U.S. users, saying the move will help fund free access while keeping answers independent and conversations private.

OpenAI has begun testing advertisements in ChatGPT for logged-in adult users in the United States, the company said, as it looks for new ways to support free access to its popular AI service without altering how answers are generated.

The test applies to users on the Free and Go subscription tiers. Higher-priced plans, including Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education, will remain free of advertising.

The rollout started this week and is limited in scope as the company gathers feedback and studies how ads fit into the ChatGPT experience.

OpenAI said ads will not influence ChatGPT’s responses and will be clearly labeled and visually separated from the AI’s answers.

Funding Free Access Without Changing Answers

ChatGPT is used by hundreds of millions of people for work, study, and everyday decisions. OpenAI said keeping the service fast and reliable requires ongoing investment in computing infrastructure.

Advertising is intended to help cover those costs and support wider access to AI tools, particularly for users on free or lower-cost plans. Users who prefer not to see ads can switch to a paid tier or opt out of ads on the free plan in exchange for fewer daily messages.

How Ads Are Selected And Shown

During the test, ads are chosen by matching advertiser submissions with the topic of a conversation, a user’s past chats, and previous interactions with ads. For example, a user discussing recipes might see promotions for grocery delivery or meal kits.

If several advertisers qualify, ChatGPT will display the ad it considers most relevant. OpenAI said all ads will be marked as sponsored and will not appear embedded within AI-generated responses.

Privacy Protections And Safety Limits

OpenAI said advertisers will not have access to user conversations, chat history, stored memories,, or personal details. Advertisers will receive only aggregated performance data, such as views or clicks.

Ads will not be shown to users under 18, either based on information provided by the user or internal prediction systems. They will also not appear next to sensitive or regulated topics, including health, mental health, or politics.

The company said it will restrict who can participate in the advertiser program and put safeguards in place to reduce the risk of scams or misleading promotions as the program develops.

Giving Users Control

Users will be able to manage the ads they see, including dismissing individual ads, providing feedback, learning why a particular ad was shown, deleting ad-related data with a single action, and adjusting personalization settings at any time.

ChatGPT ads - User control

OpenAI said user choice and transparency are central to the test as it evaluates whether ads can be helpful without being disruptive.

What It Means For Businesses

For advertisers, the test marks an early step toward using conversational AI as a new channel to reach potential customers.

OpenAI said it is exploring ways for businesses of different sizes to participate in a manner that adds value to the user experience.

Over time, the company plans to expand ad formats and buying options while keeping a clear separation between ads and ChatGPT’s answers and maintaining strict data protections.

What Comes Next

OpenAI said the focus of the current phase is learning. User feedback and early performance data will guide whether and how advertising is expanded inside ChatGPT.

The company said several principles will remain unchanged: ChatGPT’s answers will stay independent, conversations will remain private,, and users will continue to have meaningful control over their experience.
