AI SEO Link Building: What Actually Earns AI Citations in 2026

At A Glance

Key Takeaways

If you only read one section, read this one.

  • Only 37.9% of AI Overview citations now come from pages ranking in Google’s top 10, down from roughly 76% a year earlier. Ranking well still helps. It stopped being enough on its own.
  • Branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664. Backlinks correlate at 0.218. Mentions carry more weight for AI citation, though the strongest placements deliver both signals at once.
  • A backlink sitting on a page that blocks GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or Google-Extended in robots.txt passes zero authority to the AI layer, even if Google still counts it for rankings.
  • The tactics that move AI citations are the same ones that always worked: original research, editorial placements on domains AI already cites, and broken link building. The bar for quality just got higher.
  • Directory submissions, PBNs, and mass guest posting on thin sites now carry risk on both fronts, not just the Google penalty agencies used to worry about.

Nine hundred backlinks. Zero mentions in the AI Overview.

That’s the account one of our agency partners dropped into a strategy call this quarter. Rankings were fine, actually better than fine on two of the three target terms.

Traffic was flat, and when we pulled up the AI Overview sitting above those rankings, the client wasn’t in it. Three competitors were.

You’ve probably had a version of this conversation already, or you will soon. The instinct is to treat it as proof that link building stopped working.

It didn’t. What stopped working is assuming a backlink and an AI citation are the same reward for the same behavior.

What follows is where the data actually points: which tactics still earn a citation instead of just a ranking, and what a client’s link profile has to pass to matter to both systems at once.

The Foundation

Backlinks Still Do Real Work

Before getting into what changed, it’s worth settling what didn’t. If you’ve been telling clients link building still matters, you weren’t lying to them. It sits inside a bigger off-page program, and the fundamentals of that program haven’t moved much.

70%
Call Links Big Impact

Marketers who’d tell you, straight up, that backlinks are a major ranking factor. Another 30% call the impact moderate. Add those up and there’s almost nobody left who thinks links stopped counting.

~4x
More Links At Position 1

What Google’s top organic result carries over positions two through ten. If you’re wondering whether that gap closed in the AI era, it didn’t.

$5K-$10K
Monthly Link Spend

What close to half of marketers report spending each month on link building, with low-authority link pricing up about 8% year over year.

So no, that part held steady. The part worth slowing down for is what happens after that link goes live, and whether it shows up anywhere near the AI-generated answer now sitting above the blue links.

The Shift

How AI Search Actually Uses Links

In July 2025, Ahrefs measured how often a page cited in an AI Overview also ranked in Google’s top 10 for that same query. The answer then was close to 76%, which is roughly what most agencies still assume today if you ask them. Running the identical analysis in March 2026, across 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million AI Overview URLs, that number had dropped to 37.9%.

That’s not a small drift. That’s the ground moving.

Google has confirmed part of why. AI Overviews and AI Mode use a technique called query fan-out, splitting one search into several related sub-queries and pulling citations from whichever pages perform well across that expanded set, not just the original term. You can rank first for the exact keyword typed into the box and still get passed over if your page doesn’t cover the angles the fan-out queries touch.

Backlinks still feed that system, and they’re not about to stop. They remain one of the oldest, most reliable signals search engines and AI models both use to judge whether a page deserves trust.

What changed is how much weight links carry next to a newer signal: how often a brand gets talked about, linked or not, across the rest of the web. Ahrefs ran a correlation study across 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, against 0.218 for backlinks.

Three times the pull, and none of it requires a link at all. We’ve mapped what that gap means for outreach priorities in our brand mentions guide, so I won’t rebuild the whole case here.

This is also why E-E-A-T hasn’t lost relevance. If anything, it’s become the filter AI systems apply before they’ll cite anyone. A backlink from a site with no editorial standards signals nothing, not to Google and not to a model deciding who to quote.

A backlink or mention from a site AI already trusts signals almost everything, though. If a client’s site hasn’t been audited against Google’s actual quality rater guidelines recently, do that before the outreach list gets built, not after.

Signal Comparison

Backlinks or Brand Mentions? Wrong Question.

Agencies keep framing this as a budget fight between two tactics. It’s really two signals doing two different jobs, and your retainers probably need both, just weighted differently depending on where a given client sits today.

Signal
Best For
AI Correlation
Ranking Impact
Backlinks
Pages that need to rank for a specific keyword
0.218
Direct, well documented
Brand Mentions
Brands that need to be recognized as an entity
0.664
Indirect, through branded search
Linked Mentions
Both goals from a single placement
Highest combined
Direct and indirect

If you’re only tracking one column of that table right now, you’re reporting half the truth.

What To Actually Do

Five Link Building Tactics That Still Earn AI Citations

Nothing on this list is new, and that’s kind of the point. The AI layer didn’t invent new tactics. It just raised the cost of skipping the ones you already knew about.

TACTIC 01

Original Research and Data

Publish a finding nobody else has and two things happen at once. Other sites link to you because they need a primary source, and AI engines cite you because, well, you are the source.

TACTIC 02

Digital PR, Crawler Check First

Same pitch process as always. A specific claim beats a summary every time. The new step is checking whether the target publication blocks GPTBot or PerplexityBot before you bother pitching it.

TACTIC 03

Broken Link Building

Find pages in a client’s niche linking to dead URLs, then pitch the client’s page as the replacement. The referring domain already vouched for that topic once. You’re just giving them a working link to do it again.

TACTIC 04

Guest Posts on Cited Domains

Run a client’s target queries through ChatGPT and Perplexity and write down which domains keep showing up. Land a guest post there and you get link authority and AI proximity from one placement. Our guest posting guide covers the vetting criteria.

TACTIC 05

Expert Roundups and Contributions

Generic quotes get cut in editing, every time. A specific number or a counterintuitive line gets kept, gets linked, and eventually gets lifted by a model summarizing the page.

Technical Due Diligence

Before You Pitch, Check Who Can Actually Read It

A link on a site that blocks AI crawlers still passes PageRank just fine. It contributes exactly nothing to AI citation, which is why this five-minute check belongs on every outreach list before anything goes out.

1

Check robots.txt For Every Major AI Agent

OpenAI documents its crawler behavior directly, including GPTBot for training and OAI-SearchBot for live search retrieval. Anthropic, Perplexity, and Google each run separate crawlers with their own tokens, and a site can allow one while blocking another.

Check each by name. Don’t assume one generic rule covers all of them, because it usually doesn’t.

2

Confirm the Link Actually Lives in the Body

A link embedded inside an article carries more contextual weight than one parked in a footer, a sidebar, or an author bio nobody reads.

3

Use Anchor Text That Says Something

“Link building guide” tells a model what the linked page covers. “Click here” tells it nothing at all.

4

Check How Recently the Page Got Updated

AI systems show a real preference for fresher content, so a publisher who updates on a regular cadence beats one that’s sat untouched since 2021, even when the domain metrics look identical on paper.

Red Flags

What Kills Rankings and AI Citations at the Same Time

None of these are new mistakes. They just used to cost you one system’s trust. Now they cost you two.

Buying Links on Spam Networks

Google’s spam policies flatly prohibit exchanging money, goods, or services for links meant to manipulate rankings. Most paid link networks sit on domains AI crawlers never bothered indexing, so past the penalty risk, you’re paying for links that add zero AI citation value. If a client asks where the real line sits, our breakdown of buying backlinks safely covers it honestly.

Mass Guest Posting on Thin Sites

If a site wouldn’t earn its own content an AI citation, a link from it isn’t going to help your client either. Volume on low-quality domains reads as a spam pattern to modern detection systems faster than it used to.

Ignoring Crawler Access Entirely

Skipping the robots.txt check used to be a minor oversight. Now it’s the difference between a placement that works twice, for Google and for AI, and one that only ever works once.

1,500 of 2,200
Backlinks got flagged as spam on one client account and landed in a disavowal file after black-hat placements from a previous vendor started dragging keyword rankings down. Audit an inherited link profile before building anything on top of it. That’s not optional anymore, whatever the last vendor promised.

What This Looks Like In Practice

A Fintech Client, Before the Program Existed

One fintech client offering credit-risk and lending-decision tools came into a routine SEO review already fielding inbound questions sourced through ChatGPT, months before anyone had built a formal brand mention program for them. That showed up in the account notes as a real, unprompted signal that AI search had become a live discovery channel for their category, not a future one.

The competitive gap analysis that followed found the client trailing a larger, better-known competitor specifically on mention volume, not backlink count, which is exactly the pattern the correlation data predicts. The team prioritized quality over volume on the mentions side and paired it with a steady content cadence, nine new blog posts published over three months, moving generic organic impressions from roughly 4,000 to 20,000 to 45,000 month over month.

The most recent month on record showed a 51% jump in impressions and 50% growth in clicks.

None of that replaced the client’s existing backlink program. It ran alongside it. Which, honestly, is usually the correct answer when a client asks you to pick one.

Tracking

How to Know Whether It’s Working

Standard link metrics still apply here. Domain Rating, referring domain count, anchor text distribution, keep every bit of it. Add four more rows to the report you’re already sending.

  • AI crawler access rate. What share of a client’s backlinks sit on domains that allow GPTBot and PerplexityBot. Higher is better, and it’s a number almost nobody is tracking yet.
  • Citation frequency per target query. After building links from confirmed AI citation sources, check monthly whether the client’s pages start showing up as citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity for those exact queries. Our guide to tracking AI brand mentions walks through the tooling for this.
  • Topical concentration. Whether links cluster around the client’s core topic or scatter across unrelated niches. AI systems weight topical proximity heavily, more than raw domain count.
  • Branded query lift. When someone sees a brand named in an AI answer and doesn’t click, it still often shows up in Search Console as a rise in queries containing the brand name. It’s the metric that catches the credit that link-based reporting misses entirely.

For agencies deciding whether to build this tracking in house or hand delivery to a partner, that’s the same build-versus-buy calculus covered in our white label SEO guide.
