What Exactly Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout?
Instant Checkout is a new feature within ChatGPT that enables users to purchase products directly from the chat interface.
Starting today, U.S. users on ChatGPT Free, Plus, and Pro plans can purchase single items from Etsy sellers directly. More than one million Shopify merchants including big names like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx and Vuori will be added soon.

A user types a query in plain language, such as “gifts for a ceramics lover” or “best running shoes under $100.”
ChatGPT then returns product recommendations ranked by relevance, not sponsorship. If a product supports Instant Checkout, the user taps “Buy,” confirms their shipping and payment details and the order is completed inside the chat.
Behind the scenes, the merchant still handles fulfillment, shipping and customer service. ChatGPT’s role is to act like a digital personal shopper, seamlessly passing the transaction information to the seller.
How Does the Agentic Commerce Protocol Work?
At the core of Instant Checkout is something called the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP).
Co-developed by OpenAI and Stripe, ACP is the framework that lets AI agents, businesses and people collaborate securely to complete purchases.
It works across platforms and payment processors, integrates quickly without requiring merchants to change their systems, and ensures merchants remain the merchant of record.
That means sellers keep control of the customer relationship, from fulfillment and returns to ongoing support.
For Stripe merchants, enabling ACP can be done with as little as one line of code. For those using other payment processors, they can still participate via Stripe’s new Shared Payment Token API or by adopting ACP’s Delegated Payments Spec.
In short, OpenAI has designed ACP to be easy, flexible and trustworthy.
Why Did Etsy Shares Jump 16% After the Launch?
According to report by CBNC Etsy’s stock price closed up nearly 16% on the day of the announcement, while Shopify rose more than 6%.
Why? Investors see a new sales channel. For Etsy, with its marketplace of independent sellers, Instant Checkout means their products can now appear directly within ChatGPT conversations and be purchased with just a few taps.
