Senthil: How do you define technical SEO from your perspective?

Jesus: From my perspective, I’d like to define technical SEO as the ability to have a website that is easily crawlable and indexable by search engines.

Let me elaborate on it a bit more. Easily crawlable and indexable sites are those that are optimized for speed and performance. Page speed is an important aspect of technical SEO. Another thing that you need to worry about is accessibility. In my opinion, technical SEO is making sure that the website is optimized for all these factors in the backend.

Senthil: What are some of the common SEO tools that people can use to clean up technical SEO issues on their site?

Jesus: There are certain paid and free tools out there. The premium tools I personally like to use among them are SEMRush, Screaming Frog, Website Auditor from SEO PowerSuite, and free tools like W3C Validator, GTmatrix, and Schema Markup tool from Google. These are the tools that I use while dealing with technical SEO issues on client sites.

Senthil: Do you suggest any more techniques to clean up technical SEO errors on websites besides using these tools mentioned above?

Jesus: Yeah, GTmatrix is mainly a tool that helps gauge the speed of a particular webpage on a website. So, a site that’s cleaning up technical errors, one big focus is the site speed, which can be obtained using CDN like Cloudflare. A CDN is going to make your site load faster and make your site a little more secure.

If you use WordPress, you can use plugins to minify CSS, Javascript, and HTML files. WPRocket is another tool that does a great job of cleaning up issues that slow down your site.

Senthil: Apart from these errors, what are some other ways to check whether a particular site is working properly in the eyes of the search engines?

Jesus: Yeah, the most simple thing you can do is to add “site” (your website name)” and see whether your web pages appear in the search results. If your website has issues, none of the web pages will show up.

Another troubleshooting thing that you can do is to go to the URL of a site and then do a /robot.txt. This will help you find the common mistakes disallowing the main route of the whole website.

Besides this, a lot of time in the header, you’ll find the no-index tag. It is another place where you can see whether any ads are blocking that particular page.

Senthil: What are the other things that you suggest for people to check out on their websites?

Jesus: Right, so when it comes to SEO, there are three main elements, the on-page SEO, off-page SEO, and technical SEO. If you are only focused on technical SEO, you might not focus on creating good content and promoting it across. If you are not focusing on good content, then you cannot rank well.

Senthil: Is there anything else that’s closely related to technical SEO that our users should be aware of?

Jesus: Probably, another thing that mentioned a lot is canonical tags. Canonical tags can be added to the copied version of the content from a website to give credit to the source from which you’ve initially taken the content.

Senthil: I think these tags are especially helpful for news aggregation sites that syndicate a lot of news from other sources. Canonical tags save these sites from getting penalized by Google, as Google hates duplicate content.
