The study found that AI Mode responses show only 51% overlap with Google’s top 10 organic results at the domain level and just 32% at the URL level. This means more than half of what AI engines are citing does not even appear in traditional search results.

The SEMrush Study: How AI Mode Works vs. Traditional Search
The SEMrush team analyzed 5,000 randomly selected keywords across Google Search, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity, uncovering patterns that should make every marketer rethink their SEO strategy.
Here is something that might surprise you: 92% of AI Mode responses feature a sidebar showing approximately 7 unique domains.
Think about that for a moment, nearly every AI search is displaying multiple sources, not just one “winner” like traditional search.
These sidebar citations show only 51% domain overlap and 32% URL overlap with Google’s traditional top 10 results. What does this tell us? AI engines are making independent decisions about what sources to trust and cite.
In just 7% of AI Mode queries, additional links appeared below the response. But here is the kicker that these links showed an 89% domain overlap and 80% URL overlap with Google’s top 10 results.
It is almost like AI Mode runs on two systems: one for broad exploration (the sidebar, which experiments with diverse sources) and another for precision (the below-response links, which closely mirror traditional rankings).
Another fascinating finding is the role of user-generated content platforms. Reddit, YouTube, and even open-source sites like OpenStreetMap consistently appeared among the top citation sources across AI platforms.
In fact, Reddit showed up in more than 68 percent of AI Mode results. This is not a coincidence. Google recently struck a licensing deal with Reddit and it is clear that AI engines now consider UGC as a major trust signal. Finally, query intent made a huge difference. For commercial searches “best CRM for startups” or “top IT support services”, AI responses were almost twice as long as informational ones.
This indicates that AI sees commercial queries as high-stakes moments where users want more context, comparisons and details before making decisions.
The study revealed distinct “citation personalities” among AI platforms:
- Perplexity showed the highest overlap with Google’s top 10 (91% domain overlap)
- AI Overviews maintained significant overlap (86% domain, 67% URL)
- AI Mode demonstrated more independence (54% domain, 35% URL overlap)
- ChatGPT showed the least overlap, often citing different pages from the same trusted domains
